However, if you’ve spent years solving complex problems in tech, finance, operations or marketing, these same companies may pay generously to borrow your brain — no full-time commitment required.
Specialized consultants can earn anywhere from $75 to $150 per hour. Plus, with AI automation consultants charging $100 to $250 per hour for building workflows in tools like Zapier or Make, even 10 billable hours a week puts you well past $50,000 a year. Platforms like Toptal, Catalant, and GLG connect experienced professionals with paying clients fast. Companies might need extra support to keep the data flowing and the systems up to date.

Kaelani shared that project-based scopes may include fixing databases, integrating CRMs, automating workflows, building and managing cloud infrastructures, and more. “We’ve seen side hustles in this category pull $75,000 to $150,000 [a year] depending on the number of clients,” Kaelani added.
Freelance Graphic Designers
Don’t let the word freelance fool you — this one can be a full-time income on a part-time commitment. Designers with niche expertise in user interface or brand identity often charge $100 or more per hour, while flat-rate packages for logos and social media bundles create predictable monthly income.
According to Mercelyn “Kerry” Francis, founder ofClever Hustle Wallet, being a freelance graphic designer is a job or side hustle that has been around for years and is still big in the buyers’ market.
“Designers are taking home over $50,000 per year and can do it from anywhere in the world,” said Francis. “Think about companies that need branding, a logo, a brochure or flyers. This job silently makes people money up to $100 per hour.”
Grant Writing
Here’s one most people haven’t considered, and the people who have are quietly making serious money. When you consider it was one of the fastest-growing jobs in the U.S. in 2025, per a LinkedIn report, it’s no wonder. Nonprofits, universities, healthcare organizations and government agencies all need grant writers, and supply is thin, as knowing how to write and ask for money in the form of grants is a special skill that can make you a decent amount of income each year.
“Quality grant writers make $60,000 [to more than] $100,000 a year writing proposals, charging $500 [to] $10,000 [per] grant,” Kaelani said. “It’s relatively quiet work because everything happens behind the scenes, and companies won’t broadcast who wrote their grants.”
Fractional Executive Work
Many times, companies that are just finding their footing need people in leadership with experience and skills to oversee the growth of the business.
