Good news for Facebook Marketplace side-hustlers: Meta just launched an app that aims to improve the experience of listing and selling items on the platform.

The app, called Seller, is now available for U.S. users 18 years old and up to download on the App Store, according to a Meta press release. It operates by syncing with Facebook Marketplace—which will continue to operate within the Facebook app and website—so sellers can view existing listings, messages, and sales history while also making changes that automatically appear on Facebook Marketplace for consumers to see.

The app includes an AI tool that allows sellers to upload a photo and generate a title, description, price suggestion, and category suggestion for its Facebook Marketplace listing.

There’s also a tab for performance insights. Users on Seller can see how many views, clicks, conversations, and sales each item is getting in order to “price competitively and make smarter decisions about your inventory,”

It could be advantageous for Meta to lean into Facebook Marketplace. From 2014 to 2022, Facebook usage amongst American teens dropped from 71 percent to 32 percent, according to a Pew Research study from that year. But Facebook Marketplace, which launched in 2016, at the same time rose in popularity with thrifty Gen Zers. “I only use Facebook for Marketplace,” 24-year-old Ellicia Chiu business/gen-z-facebook-marketplace.html” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>told the New York Times in 2024.

Now, one third of young adults who use Facebook everyday also use Marketplace, Tom Alison, head of Facebook, recently told the outlet. More than 430 million items get listed on Facebook Marketplace each month across the globe.

The Seller app is part of a larger effort at Meta to create apps for Facebook’s power users “I think about these as things that complement the main app and cater to the more high-intensity user communities,” he said to the Times

The news likely isn’t good for Facebook Marketplace’s competitors. When the markets opened this morning, eBay stock dipped 3.7 percent, signaling that investors are taking note of Meta’s new app, though it has since rebounded. Etsy, meanwhile, is currently facing backlash from sellers due to its policy of allowing AI-generated goods to be sold on its platform
