When we started writing god save the nurse, I knew the visual concept would be pretty easy. This song is personal; it’s a dedication and a thank-you to my favourite people. I grew up around hospitals because my mum was an emergency nurse (and, honestly, I injured myself a lot). I already had so much respect for the profession, but the last few years watching healthcare workers around the world battle through unimaginable atrocities, still choosing to help others while those in power stayed apathetic. They are literally the backbone of society.

Sonically, bringing Brooklyn Wilson on board as our guitarist has completely taken the project to a new level too. We’re driving towards heavier riffs, harsher drums, and more dramatic production from Alex Berger. Brooklyn and I went into this track trying to avoid the usual structures, and I think we’ve really found our sound. We’ve been lucky enough to be inspired by so many diverse artists this year; I just came back from writing in South Korea with some new skills, supporting such creative acts like Paledusk, and Brooklyn has still got creatives like Poppy and BMTH in heavy rotation. It all fed into this one.

The Concept: Clinical, Edgy, and Boss Battle Ready

For the music video, I started with imagery around the medical theme. I wanted the background to feel clinical to suit the song, but also look a little rough, almost like a bunker. That felt reflective of the kind of environments medical workers are having to operate through every single day. I created a mood board to pull all these themes together, mixing the sterile hospital vibes with the “boss battle” imagery that’s become a bit of a motif throughout our music. I wanted it to feel like you’re stepping into an arena where the nurses are the heroes.

Like most independent artists, our budget is limited. So we had to get creative. Brooklyn had her Osmo Pocket handy, and we decided to just go for it in the stairwell of my apartment building. No fancy studio, no expensive rentals, just us, a tiny camera, a lot of dust inhalation and some hilarious commentary. But we didn’t go in blind. I spent time watching YouTube tutorials on angles and framing, making sure I knew exactly what-it-does/” title=”Ubersuggest Is Now Inside ChatGPT. Here's What It Does”>what playthroughs we needed on the day. We shot the entire thing in just under two hours, right before we had to run off to another show. It was chaotic, but honestly, that energy kind of made it.

Once we had all the footage, I took it home and did a rough edit to pull out all the usable content. Then I sent it over to Midnite Media for colour grading and the proper edit. And was just in awe because they really elevated the look. They gave it that tough, metal-looking energy and added some lighting edits that gave the whole thing way more drive and movement. It went from a stairwell shoot to something that actually looks like it belongs in a heavy rotation.

god save the nurse is proof that you don’t need a massive budget to make something fun. You just need a clear vision, a bit of rehis one’s for the nurses. And honestly? Just like our other tracks, this one is for the alt nerds who love to rage!
